It’s been said that the year 2020 is going to be a great year that would usher in great things for many decades to come.

Surely Prince Williams has banked on that and has ensured that the year 2020 shall be a grand opening year for many new things most especially for the planet.

As a major focus for the upcoming decade, Prince William has unveiled a multimillion-dollar international award, a product of deep thinking which has entailed about a year of preparation on the part of the Prince and many others whom he has seen as advisors and experts in the area which include his father, Prince Charles and grandfather, Prince Philip who was a former international president of the World Wildlife Fund.

The award is aimed at simply put, saving our planet. The award has been channeled to harness and build the best ideas, inventions and plans that will help tackle the biggest environmental challenges in the world. And as such, the Prince has aptly named the award Earthshot.

It is expected that the encouragement and incentive being provided by the award, will by the year 2030, 50 sound and aspiring solutions would have been found for the earth’s major environmental challenges as the award program is set to award 5 winners every year for the next decade.

The award has been launched with a video by Prince William’s Royal Foundation, which is narrated by Sir David Attenborough who over the decades has been acknowledged as a leading wildlife filmmaker. His recent work titled Our Planet which focuses on climate crisis gives Prince William’s project a deeper meaning and focus.

Attenborough says in the new video, “This year Prince William and a global alliance launch the most prestigious environment prize in history: the Earthshot Prize. A global prize designed to motivate and inspire a new generation of thinkers, leaders and dreamers to think differently. Visionaries rewarded over the next decade for responding to the great challenges of our time.”

In a statement, Prince William said, “The earth is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve.”

It is expected that this award project will define much of the Prince’s 2020 public work and he also aims to use famed ‘moon landings’ as an inspiration for the new inventions to come as the occurrences of the moon landings led to great development and inventions for mankind and this is idea is also visible in the video made by the foundation.

With the project, the Prince hopes to bring together the best in the fields, a coalition of scientists, economists, activists, governments and businesses to help put together the best ideas for the reward. As many as 60 organizations have been consulted based on the issue and on that path with so much effort being put in place, Dr. M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International, has added in a statement, “We have a very small window, 10 years, to jolt earth onto a path of sustainability. It can sound terrifying – or it can sound like one of history’s greatest opportunities. Yes, the challenges are daunting. But how we react is still, in this sliver of time left, entirely up to us – and that is what the Earthshot Prize is all about. It’s about this opportunity in front of us, right now, to choose to put our energies towards taking action and uncovering solutions, to choose to create the future we want over settling for the one that we fear.”
